What makes a good hypnotherapist?

The above question was recently put to me and although I could come up with a whole host of responses, none of them felt authentic. Certainly, you want someone who is compassionate and understanding, who is patient and knows what questions to ask, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Chemistry is an essential element for any theraputic relationship and you need to be sure it’s there when you consult a hypnotherapist for the first time. Also essential is a feeling of respect and trust: you need to feel as though you can fully confide in the person treating you.

More importantly is the question, “What makes a bad hypnotherapist?” That’s a little more important to consider, in my opinion. A bad hypnotherapist is one that appears to know all the answers and doesn’t let you express yourself fully. He or she will try to sell you several sessions at once, perhaps, or will give you the impression when your hour is up that it’s time to go, even if you’re in a state of crisis. You can most often simply feel when someone is trying to take advantage of you or isn’t fully there. It’s a good idea to heed your own advice at that point, too. Trust your intuition: even if your best friend said this hypnotherapist was the very best, if your gut is telling you to hightail it out of their office, don’t hesitate to do so.
